Co-Regulation

I just caught Emmy co-regulating with Ellis. My heart is a puddle.

Her teacher has told me how inclusive she is towards other children in her class. I’ve heard Emmy talk about her classmates, focusing on what they do well- not what they cannot do YET.

The compassion and understanding coming from this girl makes me SO proud. Her heart is pure gold.

But what is co-regulation?

Co-regulation occurs between two people. One person is in distress of some kind and the other person adjusts their emotions/behaviors to help the other person regulate. Co-regulation is most often talked about with caregivers and children, but anyone can participate in co-regulation.

As a former elementary teacher and a mother of three under the age of five, I have seen my fair share of co-regulation in the classroom and at home.
