If Kids Could Do Well, They Would

Did you know something as simple as a runny nose can be disruptive for a neurodiverse kiddo?

Ellis has been a hot mess since she opened her eyes this morning. Nothing is right, every reaction is multiplied. So. Much. Crying.

Then I realized, she’s been sniffing all morning. Her nose is runny. She’s starting to get a cold. Colds aren’t fun for adults, let alone kids, and the slightest change in her body is way more noticeable or likely to irritate her.

When kids aren’t performing their best, let’s stop assuming it’s because “they’re bad” or “their parents need to give more spankings”. Let’s reframe to assume they might:

• be hungry

• feel a cold coming on

• need a nap

• hate their clothes & feel uncomfortable

• not know how to do what you’re asking (yes- even waiting in line)

Someone once told me that if kids COULD do well, they WOULD. Ellis has proven that to me time and time again.
