What is the difference between close-ended and open-ended toys? Is one better than the other?
Close-ended toys are toys that serve a single purpose, such as puzzles, lacing cards, or a car ramp. There is a specific way to play with these toys and we usually show children how it is done.
Open-ended toys are toys that are not used for a single purpose, such as dolls, cars, or magna-tiles. There is not one specific way to play with these toys.
And believe it or not. . . there are benefits to both!
Close ended toys can provide purpose, order, and self-correction, while open-ended toys can provide opportunities for creativity and independent play!
I have noticed that my older daughter prefers open-ended toys. She is much more creative and loves to use her imagination. For my middle daughter, that is much more difficult. She prefers to play with close-ended toys because they are predictable and she can repeat the same action over & over.
Do your children prefer open-ended or close-ended toys? What are some of your favorites?
