You would think all of this would be easy with my background and how proactive we have been.
Ellis’s evaluations are over and the school district has found that she does not qualify for an IEP. She will not be attending preschool this fall because she is no longer eligible for a nontypical spot and all of the typical spots are full.
Ellis is extremely intelligent. She recognizes the number of items in a picture within seconds. She knows and uses words that are well above a 2 year old’s vocabulary. She remembers and easily recalls everything from the time she was 1.5. She will be one of those kiddos who will be able to read chapter books in kindergarten.
But she still needs supports. She still can’t sit and complete tasks like typical peers. She needs visual supports for just about everything. She is extremely picky and a restrictive eater. She struggles to engage in appropriate social interaction and regulate her emotions. She seeks constant sensory input and has very little body awareness.
To be told that she will be viewed as typical in school and is unable to access a nontypical preschool opportunity, despite the fact that she IS nontypical, is extremely frustrating.
