We have spent the morning putting together puzzles and playing while Raffi plays in the background. I love the Family Folk Spotify station, and my children do too! (Picture below)
It really got me thinking about the importance of music and the role it plays in early development. Dr. Dennie Palmer Wolf wrote an excellent research paper, Why Making Music Matters, that highlights some of the following points:
Motor Skills- When little brains tap, clap, and dance to music, they are developing fine and gross motor skills.
Relationships- Participating in musical activities together can build a bond between children and caregivers. Enjoying musical activities together also creates space for children to belong with their peers.
Language Development- Just like nursery rhymes, music provides children with a rich language experience. Children who listen to music are exposed to and learn how to manipulate the sounds and words of their language.
The 32 page research paper is a MUST read, so I have left it here.
